Elgar concerts by the ROC in Berlin
Edward Elgar was practically born into music - his father was a music dealer, piano tuner and organist and Elgar tried his hand at various instruments from an early age. Even before his Enigma Variations made him internationally famous, he had already gained recognition for his compositions.
Elgar’s Enigma Variations – a brilliant orchestral work that transforms the personal into the universal
Composed in 1899 and marking Elgar’s artistic breakthrough, the Enigma Variations are among the most distinctive orchestral works in British music history. Each of the 14 variations is dedicated to one of Elgar’s friends or family members, transforming their character into music. The title itself remains a mystery to this day – Elgar claimed that a well-known melody lies hidden beneath the variations, though it is never directly quoted. To this day, the identity of that melody has not been definitively determined. Nevertheless – or perhaps because of this – the Enigma Variations continue to offer audiences a uniquely moving musical experience. British wit is woven together with emotional depth, and despite the technical demands placed on the orchestra, the work is musically accessible and a true delight to hear.
The rich orchestration of Elgar's works is probably partly responsible for the great depth and expressiveness of his music, which is nevertheless combined with formal rigor and thus has something deeply British about it. Nevertheless, Elgar's work is infused with innovation and a wonderful elegance.
Visit one of the Elgar concerts of our ROC ensembles in the grandiose venues of Berlin and let Elgar's music take you on a deeply moving, highly melodious and almost metaphysical journey!
