Haydn's work earned him a place in the upper echelons of the music world during his lifetime - as his friendship with Mozart and Beethoven alone testifies - and more than 200 years after his death, it is still being presented to appreciative audiences in concert halls around the world.

His late works in particular, such as “The Creation” or “The Seasons”, ensure that Haydn - unlike Schubert, for example - was still able to reap his fame himself. However, it is above all his 107 symphonies for which he can confidently be called the “father of the symphony”. He did not invent it, but he gave it soul and structure.
