Yamada & Ferrández
In her First Symphony, Florence Price alludes to Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, “From the New World” – and breaks this allusion with a juba dance, which was popular among enslaved people in the Southern states. Before her groundbreaking work – the first composition by a Black woman ever performed by a major American orchestra – Dvořák himself is featured, though not the symphony, but his Cello Concerto, performed by Pablo Ferrández. The star cellist regularly records with Anne-Sophie Mutter and tours Europe with her – playing the 1689 Stradivarius "Archinto."
