Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
On the threshold between life and death: Mahler’s Adagio from the unfinished 10th symphony evokes his own mortality, while Britten’s "Four Sea Interludes" evoke murder and suicide. Liza Lim’s "Sappho", by contrast, explores feminine spirituality and eroticism. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto – written in 1809 while Napoleon’s troops were at the gates of Vienna, and yet full of defiant confidence. Michel Friedman opens with a speech. Conducting is the trailblazer Simone Young.
