Metzmacher & Morison
Facing death, Lili Boulanger composed her “D'un soir triste,” a work that oscillates between hope and pain. At the same time, she was working on her psalm setting “Du fond de l'abîme,” which cries out for healing from the depths – sung by Catriona Morison, the 2017 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. Stravinsky’s and Bernstein’s psalm works are less autobiographical in nature: Stravinsky evokes a distant paradise, while Bernstein, after a year of twelve-tone experiments, returns to a “slightly old-fashioned” B-flat major – his words. Ingo Metzmacher, former chief conductor of the DSO, will lead the concert with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Rundfunkchor Berlin at the Philharmonie.
